As a kid I remember many ghost stories about Riverton. Some of the stories were based on factual events that occurred in Riverton. I’m going to attempt to retell these stories as they were told to me. Please contact me if you have any other good stories to share or if you have any more information about the ones that I already shared.
The ghost story of Maggie Williams is probably the most famous ghost story of Riverton. It’s a story about a 15 year old girl that was buried alive in the Riverton Cemetery back in 1909. There are countless people that can tell you about different haunting events that have occurred around her grave at night. The stories range from seeing lights on her tombstone, seeing her face on the tombstone, and even seeing her roaming around the cemetery. As a kid, some of the local parents would hide money on top of her tombstone on Halloween. If you were brave enough to go get it you could keep it. Needless to say, none of us kids ever went and got the money. I’m not going to tell the full story because I have uploaded a newspaper article by Cecil Hayes that retells the story.
This story was originally told to me by Ray Hayes and is supposed to be the first original ghost story of Riverton that is based on true events. The story goes that back during the Civil War there was a farmer that lived in Hog Hollow with his wife, mentally challenged daughter, and a Indian Slave. The farmer raised Thoroughbred horses and hogs. During the Civil War the Yankees were known to have raided most of the local farms for food and supplies. The Yankees were traveling up the river by boat and noticed the farmers place. They raided his place and took all the horses and hogs, killed him and his wife but nobody ever found the Indian slave or the mentally challenged daughter. They think that the Indian slave took the daughter and escaped into the local hills. The locals in the area said that the Indian and daughter have been seen at times roaming through the hills and hollows of Riverton.
